I was born in a swamp, they say, in Africa, where I crawled out of the thin muck to stand and look over a plain of grass. They say I looked deep into the blue and shaded my eyes with my hand (the first person to make that gesture, I invented it) and stepped out of the water where I had shed my hair. There I hunted hot meat and drank the rain. I spoke with others of my kind, and we linked our minds in words, and together we created a fertile swamp of our own, in the cyberspace of thought. And viruses came out of that swamp, and we began to pile mud together to make huts, and herd animals to make hunting easier, and then, we learned grain and the grinding of grain. We invented ways to preserve the words in marks on clay, and make sure the viruses that lived in our minds could live on past our little lives. And then we invented the Internet.
